Fireworks Safety Guidelines
Preparation & Planning
-
Always read and follow all label directions and warnings carefully before igniting fireworks.
-
Ensure your fireworks are legal to use in your area, and only purchase from reputable, licensed dealers.
-
Never experiment or try to alter fireworks; use them exactly as intended.
Safe Environment
-
Always use fireworks outdoors in an open, flat area away from buildings, vehicles, dry grass, and flammable materials.
-
Keep spectators at a safe distance, preferably at least 30 feet from lighting points.
-
Be considerate of your neighbors, pets, and local wildlife.
Responsible Handling
-
Only adults should handle and light fireworks. Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.
-
Do not consume alcohol or drugs when handling fireworks.
-
Wear safety glasses and use protective gloves when lighting fireworks.
Lighting Fireworks
-
Light fireworks one at a time, and then move quickly to a safe distance.
-
Never lean over fireworks while lighting them.
-
Use an extended lighting device (such as a punk or extended lighter) to keep your body clear from fireworks.
Disposal & Cleanup
-
Do not attempt to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Wait at least 20 minutes, then soak them in water before disposal.
-
Have a bucket of water or garden hose nearby in case of fire or other mishaps.
-
After your display, soak used fireworks in water overnight, then dispose of them safely.
In Case of Emergency
-
If an injury occurs, seek immediate medical attention.
-
For fires, immediately call 911 and evacuate the area.
